What platform would you run Quetoo on if it was on Steam?:

[BUG] Hall-of-mirrors void in legacy Quake 2 maps

January 04, 2008 - 11:56am

Greetings - it appears I cannot create tickets in Trac, so I figure I should post my issue here.

One of the bullet points for this engine is drop-in support for legacy Quake 2 maps. I plopped pak0 into my directory and I've been running around in some of the single player levels. I am getting a hall-of-mirrors void problem with some of the doorways. Examples can be found in power1 and ware2... probably more as well. I am running revision 892 on Ubuntu Gutsy. I am using the default config settings, aside from control and resolution changes.

Hi,

Unfortunately, spammers like to create tickets for Viagra, and so Trac had to be locked down to developers-only. But thank you for taking the time to report a defect.

In this particular case, that's a pre-existing bug in those actual .bsp files. If you load up e.g. q2dm2, q2dm3, etc.. with any legacy Quake2 engine, you'll find those same leaky spots. It's due to flaws with the PVS calculation in the BSP compiler. To confirm this, r_usevis 0 at the console will probably make the leaks go away (but it will also yield a perhaps significant drop in framerate). Sadly, this bug (and others) still exist in the BSP tools (even in q2wmap -- our improved version of the tools).

Not much else I can say on this one for now. Except it's somewhat plausible that PVS might disappear from Q2W entirely someday.

I've played Quake 2 for years and I've never encountered these leaks before. To double-check, I ran the same levels under Quake2world and Quetoo. I didn't have any leaks with Quetoo.
